Psychological Statistical Methods





This is the undergraduate statistics with emphasis on principles and methods used in understanding and interpreting psychological data.


The objectives of this course are to enable the student to;

1. Conceptualize the role of statistics in behavior research.
2. Represent and interpret descriptive data through graphs, tables, and descriptive statistics.
3. Interpret individual and group scores in terms normal distributions.
4. Apply hypothesis testing statistics (z, t, F, Chi-square) to infer whether findings depart from that which would be expected by chance.
5. Interpret the meaning of correlations in terms of statistical and theoretical inference.
6. Conduct basic statistical analyses using the more common statistic software.
7. Interpret the statistical reports for basic experimental and correlational designs.
8. Use SPSS software to conduct basic statistical procedures.


  • High speed internet.
  • Software needed: Windows Media Player (or equivalent), Adobe reader, Flash Player, PowerPoint Viewer(free downloads), SPSS (computer services), and Excel (or alternative like open office)


Aron, A., Aron E. N., & Coups E. J. (2009). Statistics for psychology (5th ed.). Upper-Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall. (There is not a lot of difference for the 4th or 6th edition and almost any introductory psychology statistics text will cover the same material.)


Online Videos appear in each unit in High Band Media Files and Real Player. Both of these formats will require a high speed connection for viewing, although the real media files work fine in modest quality broadband. You may download a compressed folder with all of the videos for one unit. In that way, you can download them to a flash drive ( 1GB or larger) when on campus, in a library, or a WIFI site.
