Gypsy Dialects: A selective annotated bibliography of materials for the practical study of Romani
.
The study of Gypsy dialects has been a recognized sub-specialty within the field of linguistics for well
over two hundred years, but surprisingly little has been published dealing with practical aspects of learning the
language as it is actually spoken. Although literally thousands of articles have been written touching
on every conceivable aspect of Romani linguistics, most are abstruse and highly technical, with the overwhelming
majority aimed at those with scholarly interests in Indo-European philology or historical phonology.
This full-length book analyzes an exhaustive collection of materials I have assembled from throughout the world that are of practical value for learning currently-spoken dialects, and includes references to obscure Victorian essays,
portions of scholarly linguistic studies, chapters of theses and dissertations, relevant journal articles from a variety of countries in all major, and most minor,
European languages, including numerous non-English sources from Eastern Europe (which can be of value even to those unfamiliar with these languages, since Romani grammatical analyses and vocabulary stand out as meaningful once the reader has some gained some basic knowledge of any dialect), and an increasing number of Internet sites, all of which are described and evaluated.
University of Hertfordshire Press, 2008: vii-129. 1st printing sold out. In process of being reissued by the publisher as an e-Book.

"Materials for Further Study of Kalderash and Related Dialects."
At the request of the publishers, a severely condensed version of my book Gypsy Dialects: A selective annotated bibliography of materials for the practical study of Romani (See above) has been included as an appendix to the Roma ('Gypsy') author Ronald Lee's Learn Romani: Das-dúma Rromanes (the first English-language
textbook of Romani ever published). University of Hertfordshire Press (UK), 2005: 305 - 312.
“Mind the Gap -- Between Systems Designers & Users” Building on C. P. Snow's seminal insight into the "Two Cultures" of scientists and humanists in Western intellectual life, this essay is an examination of the differing Weltanschauungen of Systems and Reference librarians and the practical impact such differences have on library patrons. Although widely discussed sotto voce throughout the profession, these issues have not previously been analyzed in print (nor have practical solutions such as I propose been suggested).

"Spelling and Searching the Internet: An Overlooked Problem." (PDF)
Misspellings, phonetic spellings, deliberately idiosyncratic spellings, typographical, and other errors are examined in relation to the Internet's lack of standardization.
Despite the dramatic effect different spellings have on the outcome of searches, this topic has not been adequately
addressed in the literature nor have solutions been suggested hitherto.

"Boolean Operators and the Naïve End-User: Moving to AND." (PDF)
Discusses the impact of the incorrect use of Boolean operators on the effective use of electronic resources, and analyzes the problems inherent to many site-specific search engines. The counter-intuitive nature of Boolean logic is discussed, as are problems of conceptualization and how search engine defaults are a complicating factor for inexperienced users. A simple, transparent, user-friendly technical solution to this problem is described (with step-by-step directions for modifying code).

Different interfaces are described and compared, as are System use and design. College & Research Libraries, Vol 56, No 5 (September 1995): 446-458.

“Simplify, Simplify: Library Websites & The Temptation of Excessive Technology” [DRAFT]
Library homepages, OPACs, digital reference Websites, and customizable interfaces to databases (such as “MyLibrary”) all are increasingly designed
more with the interests of computer-savvy librarians in mind than those of end-users.
Arguments are posited against this trend. A simpler alternative, based on the application of Ockham’s Razor and the incorporation of data from studies of
usability and information-seeking behavior, is described.

"The Impact of Information Technology (IT) on the Libraries of Benares, India". [DRAFT]
Based on research conducted during the Summer of 2003 in Varanasi, aka Banaras, Banares, and Kashi (among many, many other names), India, at
Banaras Hindu University, the
Kashi Vidyapeeth, the
Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya,
and the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, this study examines how
IT is being incorporated into institutions of higher education in this center of traditional Hindu scholarship. (Research completed).
"Variants of the First Edition of Dr. David Livingstone's Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa". [DRAFT] I have detected several errors in the
published literature concerning the first edition of this classic of colonial
era exploration. After examining copies in the British Library,
the Geological Society of London ,
the Library of Congress,
the National Geographic Society,
the National Library of Medicine,
the Natural History Museum (London),
the Newberry Library,
the Royal Geographical Society,
the Library of the School of Oriental and
African Studies (Lond.),
the Smithsonian,
the The Wellcome Library (formerly part of The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine), and numerous rare book dealers in London and Edinburgh,
in addition to primary source material in the archives of Livingstone's publisher,
John Murray, and in the
National Library of Scotland, I discuss these variants and
offer some suggestions as to possible candidates for the status of first issue. (Completing final draft).

“Victorian Cryptography as a Means of Facilitating Clandestine Romance”. An analysis and re-publication of
encrypted primary source material from Victorian-era (1837 -- 1901) British newspapers (primarily The Times and The Scotsman). Composed predominately in monoalphabetic simple substitution ciphers,
these messages usually contained details of arranging for assignations, lovers’ quarrels, billets-doux, domestic trivia, and so forth
As
Charles Babbage wrote in his autobiography,
Passages from the Life of a Philosopher, "very few
ciphers are worth the trouble of unravelling them." Other contemporaries who occupied themselves with deciphering these
messages included Lyon Playfair ,
Charles Wheatstone
, and Sherlock Holmes.
Research based on hard copies held by the British Library Newspapers, located in Colindale, North West London.

"The Arya Samaj and the 'Reform' of Hindi". [DRAFT] This article, based on my MA thesis at SOAS (see above) which I was invited to deliver at the 5th World Hindi Conference, by the Government of India Ministry of Education, deals with the social and linguistic effects of a nineteenth-century Hindu revivalist reform movement on the development of modern Hindi prose.
