Dr. Mike Carlie

Mike Carlie was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1944. He attended the University of Missouri (Columbia) where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 and a Master of Arts in 1967. In 1967 Dr. Carlie received a scholarship from the Midwest Center for Social Research on Aging to attend Washington University (St. Louis) where he received a Ph.D. in sociology. At that time his areas of specialization included gerontology and social psychology. His interest in criminology and criminal justice were to surface only two years after receiving his PhD.

Dr. Carlie has taught at the University of Missouri in St. Louis (UMSL, 1970-1972), Ball State University (Muncie, IN, 1972-1986) and at Missouri State University in Springfield Missouri (1986-2010). Dr. Carlie is now an Emeritus Professor of sociology and criminology at Missouri State University.
 
From 1970 to his retirement in 2010 Dr. Carlie conducted research, provided consulting services and published in the field of criminal justice. He taught a variety of courses including an Introduction to Sociology, Social Gerontology, Social Problems, Social Inquiry, Sociological Theory, The Gang Phenomenon, Corrections, Policing in American Society, Capital Punishment, Crime and the Media and a course which introduced students to the both the juvenile- and criminal justice systems in the United States.
 
Over his forty years as a practicing academic Dr. Carlie served on various community agency boards that dealt directly with problems associated with delinquency and crime. He was also a consultant to the Departments of Corrections in Indiana and Missouri, President of the Board of group homes for delinquent youth, a member of the United States Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Planning Agency and spent six years teaching inside a state penitentiary. While employed as an academic, Dr. Carlie was an author, lecturer, guest speaker, and advisor, and while retired, continues to serve as a member of the Springfield Advocates for Youth Advisory Board in Springfield, MO.
 
Dr. Carlie was the co-author, with Dr. Kevin I. Minor, of the anthology Prisons Around the World and the author of the online book Into the Abyss: A Journey into the World of Street Gangs. Into the Abyss has been adopted by law enforcement and correctional treatment agencies across the United States and in Canada by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His online book was the result of 10 years of field research into street gangs during which time he interviewed gang members and rode with police gang units across the United States, with the Amsterdam Police (Politie) and Scotland Yard (London, England). He also interviewed probation and parole officers with gang member case
loads, school security personnel, counselors, politicians and others with a vested interest in the gang phenomenon. He also conducted a thorough review of the gang-related. His most recent article (“Why Gangs Form”) appeared in the January, 2008, issue of the Canadian Journal of Criminology & Criminal
Justice.

Now retired, Dr. Carlie enjoys his daily workouts, reading, visiting with friends and making music. He has been an avid guitar and piano player and a singer since childhood.
