- Had a "Zoom Thanksgiving" at our research group meeting before the break. #HappyThanksgiving & #staysafe everyone!
- Congratulations to David Magness in successfully defending his Master's thesis in Materials Science titled "Kinetic Monte Carlo Investigations of Atomic Layer Deposition of Metal-Oxide Thin Films" Excellent job!
- Even though I am on sabbatical this Fall, we are still keeping up with the tradition every semester in taking our research group photo, well, sort of, à la Zoom Here is our group photo of Fall 2020. A compilation of our group photos over the years is here.
From top & left to right: em> Devon Romine, Dr. S, Emily Justus, Bikash Timalsina, Kobby Asante-Boahen, Alin Niraula, Matt Boeser & Tyler McGilvry-James. Missing in Zoom picture: David Magness.
- It's been a privilege giving a public lecture on Computational Materials Science to many students & faculties at Indonesian universities as a part of the Virtual Public Lecture (VPL) P2P program hosted by the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember @its_campus . Thank you very much!
- We are thrilled to team up with Dr. Sheryl Brahnam who will lead a new collaboration between the two Colleges; College of Business @MOStateCOB & College of Natural & Applied Sciences @CNASatMSU, thanks to the 2020 @NASA Missouri Space Grant Consortium Affiliates Award. The award will support training for our Missouri State students on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications to identify a variety of defects in structural materials. Our project is called AIDE: Artificial Intelligence for Defect Examination. More details about the project were covered by our Dept's blog.
- Congratulations to our group member Yuxuan Lu in successfully defending her thesis titled "Reactive MD simulation on the formation of amorphous sub-nano alumina layer using atomic layer deposition (ALD)" for a MSc degree in Materials Science at our PAMS Dept. Well done Yuxuan!
- Every change of semester since Spring 2018, we would traditionally take our group photo in campus. This summer has been quite "memorable", got to do it via Zoom style. Here is one for the books!
- I am deeply honored to receive an Outstanding Thesis Advisor Award at the 2020 Virtual Frank Einhellig Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum hosted by the Graduate College at Missouri State via @Zoom. All credits go to my former grad. students @PAMSatMSU @CNASatMSU now PhD students at various R-1 Universities. Thank you
- Testing the feasibility of an online course in electron microscopy at our PAMS Dept. via Zoom Meetings. The cloud platform enables our students to run the microscope remotely. It also gives them the capability to run our newly acquired ULTIM MAX EDS detector made by Oxford Instruments along with its AZtekLive EDS Analysis. More details about the alternative methods of teaching were covered by our MSU Student Newspaper The Standard.
- Our newest group member Joy Datta, a grad. student in Materials Science program @MSUGradCollege, gets a head start in his research in modeling the deformation behavior in #highentropy #alloys at at the atomic level. Welcome to the group Joy & great job!
- Our scanning electron microscope (SEM) at the PAMS dept. gets a new & more advanced Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) ULTIM MAX detector, manufactured by Oxford Instruments, a critical instrument for research & education, thanks to the support from the Provost's Office, @PAMSatMSU & @CNASatMSU. Look forward to getting this analytical tool be integrated into our SEM course: MAT514/614 (Techniques in Electron Microscopy).
- Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the College of Engineering at the California Polytechnic State University, at San Luis Obispo; meeting with my colleague the Director of Electric Power Institute and EE Prof. Taufik in his Power Lab., a fellow UW-Madison alumni & EE Chair Prof. Dennis Derickson & the faculties at the Dept. of Materials Engineering. My special thanks to Prof. Mohsen Kivy in hosting my seminar talk & in building a new research collaboration with our group at Missouri State.
L-R: With EE Prof. Taufik, Materials Engineering (MATE) Prof. Mohsen Kivy, EE Dept. Chair & a fellow Badger Prof. Dennis Derickson, seminar talk at Mat. E. Dept.
- Congratulations to our group alumni Nirmal Baishnab in getting the research work from his thesis published: https://doi.org/10.1088/2053-1591/ab7b2c… via @IOPscience
- At #TMS2020, catching up with my colleague & fellow @UWMadison alumni Prof. O. Marcelo Suarez Director of Nanotechnology Center UPRM-CREST & Program Coord. of MS&E at the Univ. of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez @uprm . Look forward to building research collab. between @MissouriState & @uprm !

- During the last five and a half years @PAMSatMSU @CNASatMSU @MissouriState, there have been many students, graduates or undergraduates, with diverse backgrounds that joined our research group, either working for their senior project, thesis, or research paper/presentation. They have contributed greatly toward our research programs. I feel truly privileged and blessed. These @maroonation members are listed as our research group alumni.
